Festive Season Safety Tips

It might be the silly season, but when it comes to keeping our Wonder Bars supporters safe over the year-end break – we’re DEADLY serious…

December is a time for relaxation, unwinding the stress of the past year, and letting our hair down for a while before it’s back to the grind come January.

With our guard down, criminals (who don’t take a holiday) see us as easy targets. So, the festive season is actually a time for more vigilance instead of less; more safety precautions instead of fewer.

Wonder Bars offers three festive season safety tips to keep you and yours safe this year-end break…

1. Victory in Vigilance

The first festive season safety tip we’re sharing is all about keeping your eyes peeled.

You don’t have to jump up every time you hear a rustle at the side of your holiday accommodation, but be vigilant.

Too often, holiday makers will become lax and do silly things like leaving a smartphone on an outdoor table, or dropping their shoes and bags off at the front door and forgetting about them.

You relax when you’re on holiday, which is perfectly normal, but potential criminals know you are relaxed – and will take advantage of any situation they encounter.

So, as a rule of thumb, avoid leaving things outdoors or near open windows while on holiday this December – regardless of where you’re vacationing.

2. Stress Less with Locks

We understand – who can truly relax when having to spend the holiday locked behind security gates and doors?

Most dwellings in South Africa will feature a security gate on front and rear doors, and more than likely have burglar proofing on the windows.

When spending time at your holiday accommodation, ensure your security gates are locked at all times (you can leave the door open for a draft) and keep any windows without burglar guards closed permanently.

Also, refrain from leaving your car unlocked while ‘quickly popping into’ anywhere. Potential hijackers, especially in small coastal towns where police aren’t exactly the best of the best, only need a window of a few seconds to make your car disappear.

So, as a rule of thumb, lock your car when you’re not using it – even if it’s parked just outside your bedroom window.

3. Cashless is King

Our final festive season safety tip is kind of a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people don’t think about it!

Try and use your bank cards as much as you can to purchase things while on holiday, and if you must draw cash for something, draw small amounts at a time.

Walking around with a thick wallet during December is like having a big sign reading I HAVE MONEY ON ME – you’re bound to be asked for it by someone!

So, as a rule of thumb, keep as little cash on you as possible, and spend cash as soon after you’ve drawn it as humanly possible.
